So there were no doubts about the name of the new club. “We will call it Roma!” claimed Foskey in response to a question about the name. The history of logo creating is almost the same. The managers of the new club took the already existing logo of the Fortitude club. However, the emblem seemed to be the best for the club, and this fact was impossible to ignore. The Roma logo consists of two parts the Capitolian wolf is depicted in the upper part, and the ASR logo Associazione Sportiva Roma – Roma Sports Association is on the bottom. Capitol wolf is one of the main signs of the Eternal City. According to the legend, Romulus and Remus, the founders of Rome, were brought up by a wolf, which became the city’s sacred animal. The emblem colors were taken from the Roman flag the golden color symbolizes the gods, and the red-brown – the emperors. Roman legionaries also wore yellow-red colors. Actually, since then, the logo of Roma was slightly changed. Over the years, Roma has got the nickname “wolves,” which made the club to the radical emblem change in the 80s. Now on the Roma T-shirts image contained the face of a wolf. It was quite cute and, at the same time, aggressive. Also, the team themselves performed quite well at that time. However, the fans missed the wolf with Romulus and Remus. So, in the 90s, the old Roma logo returned to the T-shirts again. After that, there were insignificant changes in the arrangement of letters and their font, but the essence remained the same, and Roma is the main club in Rome, which follows the great traditions of the Eternal City. So, in general, these are all elements of the current emblem of Roma. It is unlikely that shortly, we will see something new, except that Francesco Totti will join the silhouettes of Romulus and Remus. What is Roma? Roma is an Italian sports association from Italy that unites professional footballers. It had existed since 1927 when a historical merger of four teams occurred. The club has won multiple Coppa Italia and Supercoppa Italiana titles and has led Serie A three times. Its founder is Italo Foschi. The headquarters are located in the city of Rome. The home arena is Stadio Olimpico. 1927 – 1930 The first emblem of Roma was dedicated to the sculpture called Lupa Capitolina. The image of the animal feeding the twins Remus and Romulus was inside a white heraldic shield with a black outline. And right under the drawing was a monogram of the letters “A,” “S,” and “R” Associazione Sportiva Roma. In the late 1920s, this graphic sign was found almost everywhere, including on subscriptions. It was just not present on the players’ uniforms. But it’s worth noting that the soccer club didn’t receive official permission to use the city’s historical sculpture in its logo, so it had no legal rights to it. 1930 – 1934 At the beginning of the 1930s, an emblem appeared, which became the first “decoration” of the players’ uniforms. A red circle with a yellow inscription “ASR” looked simple but interesting the letters were compressed to fit in the ring. The color combination presented is now considered a Roma classic. 1934 – 1960 The period that began in the late 1930s and lasted for the next 30 years was fairly unstable. Initially, designers developed a logo in the form of a shield with a large monogram divided into two parts. It was used only for away games until 1943. Simultaneously, another emblem existed a shield with the Capitoline Wolf and the club’s initials. It was almost the same as the 1927 version, but the artists added more color. This graphic symbol was never featured on the players’ uniforms. 1960 – 1977 The image was altered the drawing with the she-wolf stopped resembling the original sculpture, and the shield got a light-brown border. The letters in the monogram became white and scattered. 1977 – 1997 The modernized logo with the wolf’s head inside a circle was introduced in 1978. Before, it symbolized the city’s history, but now it was made more market-oriented. The designers had one single goal – to devise a trademark that would help effectively promote the Roma brand in the market and stimulate the sale of merchandise. 1997 – 2000 In 1997, the club returned to its roots, reviving the old emblem with Lupa Capitolina. But this time, they acted smarter and previously obtained permission from the city authorities to use the statue’s image. Thus, the she-wolf feeding Remus and Romulus legally “settled” on the heraldic shield. 2000 – 2013 In the new millennium, a black outline appeared around the shield, and the primary colors became a bit brighter. 2013 – 2016 In 2011, the club was purchased by a group of owners from the US. The new owners initiated a logo change, which took place in 2013. Designers transformed the drawing style, so the image of the Capitoline she-wolf stopped resembling the original statue. Discontented fans stated that it was an act of vandalism and ruthlessly criticized the innovation. Against this background, other changes were insignificant. The developers replaced the monogram with the word “Roma,” and in the shield’s bottom corner, they placed the club’s foundation year 1927. 2016 – today Another redesign was conducted in 2016. To the fans’ disappointment, the artists did not bring back the classic Capitoline she-wolf. Instead, they made minor adjustments to the color scheme, using yellow instead of orange. Font and Colors The main element of Roma’s visual identification is the she-wolf feeding Romulus and Remus. According to the legend, one of these twins grew up and founded the city that later became Italy’s capital. Moreover, the logo doesn’t merely depict mythical characters but the famous statue of Lupa Capitolina. Its original is kept in the Capitoline Museums, and numerous copies are scattered worldwide. Hence, the football team’s emblem is directly connected with the cultural and historical heritage of its homeland. It’s the most “Roman” thing that the designers could have come up with. The modern emblem uses the same font as was used from 2013 to 2016. Both the letters in the word “Roma” and the digits in the club’s founding year have long, thin serifs. Apparently, this is one of the versions of the Roman capital font. As for the color selection, the football team remains faithful to its traditions. The current logo, like many others, contains two main colors red and yellow. Now they are complemented by black and gray, which were needed to highlight some elements.
